Girls’ Festival

3rd of March is Girls’ Festival Day.  To celebrate this festival, families with daughters set hina ningyo dolls at home.  Hina ningyo dolls usually consist of a prince and a princess at least and sometimes have other dolls such as three maids and five male musicians.

It is said that after 3rd of March, if you don’t stow away dolls, your daughters cannot go wedding early.  It is better to set up dolls early and stow away quickly.

Anyway, if you walk around the town at this time of the year, you may see Hina ningyo dolls.  This one is a set of very traditional dolls.

In Tokyo, usually the prince stands on the right side and the princess is on the left side.  But if you go to Western part of Japan, for example in Kyoto, the princess is on the right and the prince is on the left.  I heard that the way of Kyoto was the original.  However, in Western society, the protocol says that the prince is on the right and Tokyo-style followed this Western style.
