Walking & Biking around Tsukiji Fish Market

One of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo must be Tsukiji Fish Market.  If you want to watch tuna auction, you have to go there early in the morning.  But even in the afternoon, you can enjoy walking along the shops just oustside of the market.  There are a bunch of shops selling fish, vegitables, snacks, sweets and so on.  And at the edge of the Tsukiji area, there is Tsukiji Namiyoke Jinja Shrine whose origin goes back to the mid 17th century.

Namiyoke, the name of this shrine, means to avoid waves.  Shuogun, the government at that time was trying to reclaim the sea of this area which was always prevented by the big waves.  But once the shrine was built in this area in 1659, the waves stopped.  So it was believed that the god of the shrine took away the troubles and overcame the waves.  To worship the god, people giant dedicated lion heads.
