Mariko Juku, Old Post Station

Tokaido Shinkansen Line runs on the old route called Tokaido which connects Tokyo and Kyoto.  Along the route, there are 53 post stations altogether and the Ukiyo-e painter Hiroshige Ando drew “53 Stations of Tokaido Route”.  The scnery of course has changed duringe several centuries but sometimes, old shops in the Ukiyo-e paintings still remain today.  Near from Abekawa, there is an old post station called Mariko.  Hiroshige drew a yam soup shop called Choji-ya in this area.Ukiyo-e Painting of Mariko Juku

This Choji-ya still serves grated yam soup today.Choji-ya Restaurant at Mariko Juku

By the way, Hiroshige’s Ukiyo-e of Mariko Juku is said to give effect to Monet’s painting of Haystacks.

Japanese Wikipedia says that Monet followed Hiroshige’s way of painting gradation and shade.  Why not compare the two paintings?

  1. 21st Nov, 2012- I published poetry based on Hiroshige woodcuts on this road and the Kisikaido Road on my site. Now I am writing boussekusekeiko on Hokusai woodcuts.
Perhaps you’d like to read them?
