Tokaido Shinkansen Line runs on the old route called Tokaido which connects Tokyo and Kyoto. Along the route, there are 53 post stations altogether and the Ukiyo-e painter Hiroshige Ando drew “53 Stations of Tokaido Route”. The scnery of course has changed duringe several centuries but sometimes, old shops in the Ukiyo-e paintings still remain today. Near from Abekawa, there is an old post station called Mariko. Hiroshige drew a yam soup shop called Choji-ya in this area.
This Choji-ya still serves grated yam soup today.
By the way, Hiroshige’s Ukiyo-e of Mariko Juku is said to give effect to Monet’s painting of Haystacks.
By Claude Monet – Unknown, Public Domain, Link
Japanese Wikipedia says that Monet followed Hiroshige’s way of painting gradation and shade. Why not compare the two paintings?
By the soup shop Choji-ya, there is a remain of old Japanese inn.
