Azabu Juban is near from Roppongi. But unlike Roppongi, this area has many old and traditional shops. This is also a temple town, so you can enjoy walking in the traditional area, doing window shopping and visiting temples.
But this traditional shopping district also started to change at the begining of the new century. The most unique scene is the high-rise apartment houses among greens and temples. It is a rather weird mixture of old and modern.
Motoazabu Hills Forest Tower is the name of this tall residential building. At the foot of this building, there is Zempuku-ji Temple where the very first US legation in Japan was established in 19th century by Townsend Harris.
Zempuku-ji Temple was opened by Kobo-Daishi, a famous monk, the founder of Shingonshu Sect in 824. When another famous monk Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Sect visited this temple, they changed the sect from Shingonshu to Jodo Shinshu. Shinran put his staff on the ground when he left the temple and it was said that the staff was turned into the ginkgo tree. The tree is said to be older than 780 years old. There is a statue of Shinran in the graveyard of the temple.
